What a Slab Leak Actually Is

Most houses in this part of North Texas are built on a concrete slab poured directly on the ground, with the water supply lines running under or through that concrete. A slab leak is simply a break or a pinhole in one of those lines. Because the pipe is buried, nothing drips visibly. The water goes into the soil, or it finds its way along the underside of the slab until it comes up at an edge, a crack or a bathtub surround. That is why the clues are indirect, and why people often live with one for months before it is identified.

The Warm Spot on the Floor

The single most recognizable sign is a patch of floor that is noticeably warmer than the area around it, usually on tile or vinyl where you can feel it underfoot. That happens when the leak is on the hot water line, and the escaping hot water heats the concrete above. Pets often find it before people do. A cold-side leak gives no warm spot at all, which is one reason cold leaks tend to run longer before anyone notices. If you find a warm patch that was not there last year, take it seriously.

Sounds and the Meter

The second clue is sound. In a quiet house, late at night, a slab leak can be heard as a faint constant hiss or the sound of running water when nothing is switched on. It is easiest to hear in a hallway or a bathroom with the television and air conditioning off. The meter confirms it. Turn off every tap and appliance that uses water, then look at the meter: many have a small triangular or star-shaped low-flow indicator that spins on the slightest flow. If it is moving with everything off, water is being lost somewhere between the meter and the fixtures.

The Water Bill and the Pressure

A bill that climbs without any change in how the household uses water is a classic slab leak symptom, and it often arrives before anything is visible indoors. So does a gradual drop in pressure at the taps, particularly on the hot side if that is the line that has failed. Neither on its own proves a slab leak, because both can be caused by an irrigation fault or a leaking toilet, but combined with a warm floor or the sound of running water they make a strong case for getting it located properly.

Damp, Smell and Movement

Later signs are the ones that cost money. Carpet that is damp at the edge of a room with no fixture nearby. Wood flooring that cups or lifts. Tile that cracks in a line. Baseboards that swell or discolor. A musty smell in one room that never quite clears, which is moisture in the flooring and the wall base. At that stage water has been under the slab long enough to soak materials, and the repair is joined by drying and restoration work that would not have been needed earlier.

Why the Clay Soil Matters Here

If the leak is on the hot side, closing the cold inlet valve on top of the water heater slows it considerably. Otherwise close the main at the meter box between uses.
